Road trip across the Route of Tequila: a brilliant idea for an after-lockdown vacation

Fortunately, the risk brought by COVID-19 has dramatically decreased since tourists are slowly returning to travel, eager to discover all the wonders the world has to offer. In this train of thought, a road trip across the Route of Tequila seems a formidable idea. Beyond the attractions and places of interest you could find in this circuit, by going on a tour on your car, you guarantee a virus-free ambient and a vacation full of fun.


What must I know before embarking on a road trip across the Route of Tequila?

This is a tourist circuit in Jalisco, designed to show the culture that stands behind the iconic Mexican drink. In fact, it isn’t just about delicious dishes and amazing cocktails, it’s about going back in time to the heyday of agave-plantations, discovering magical stories full of tradition, strolling across beautiful fields where agave-plants get lost in the horizon, and recognizing the charm and beauty of the 8 towns along this route.

A weekend seems the perfect time for a getaway to the Route of Tequila. Whether you live near Guadalajara or you’re visiting the state of Jalisco, a trip across this circuit is always a hit.


The best way to discover the Route of Tequila by car
If you have already made your mind on touring this route by car, the next step is to define where to start. Let’s say that this circuit is something like a circle around the majestic Tequila’s Volcano, so there are two possible ways to travel it:

1. The archeological tour


This route must be preferred by people who love history and indigenous people. You will visit a mysterious archeological site named Guachimontones, some old farms and plantations, and discover the beauty of these towns by listening to the stories, legends and myths told by the locals.

To start the journey, you must depart from Guadalajara, heading to Teuchitlán. You can take federal Highway 70, also known as Carretera Libre Refugio San Marcos.

2. Agave plantations’ tour

 

Now, if you’re more the kind of person who loves natural landscapes, you should begin on the other side of the circuit, heading to El Arenal. This charming town is famous for having breathtaking sceneries of agave-fields and the very first trace of tequila’s industry in Jalisco. This tour was created for you to admire the green-carpet made by the fertile soil around the volcano and discover the oldest distilleries where the Mexican drink was produced.

If you want to start on this side of the Route of Tequila, you should make your way to El Arenal. You can either take federal Highway 70 or Guadalajara - Tepic Highway.
