Road trip across the Route of Tequila: maps and advice

 As we mentioned in the last entry, going on a tour across the Route of Tequila by car is an amazing idea to enjoy the charming towns in Jalisco after the lockdown. So, now, we’re about to share some pieces of advice for you to take advantage of your next vacation and enjoy this tour to the extreme.

Before we start, It’s important to remember that there are two possible ways to make this tour: the archeological route and the agave-plantations’ route. Each one has its own charm, so deciding which is the best would definitely be up to you. The bright side is that there are no wrong choices. Whether you begin with ancient cultures or natural wonders, sooner or later, you will visit all attractions in the Route of Tequila. In the end, this is a circuit that surrounds the colossal Tequila’s Volcano.


The archeological route


Let’s start with the route that goes through the pre-Hispanic vestiges in the Route of Tequila. In this part of the tour, you will visit 4 out of the 8 towns along this circuit: Teuchitlán, Ahualulco de Mercado, Etzatlán y San Juanito Escobedo. Although they aren’t as famous as “El Pueblo Magico de Tequila”, they have special magic that will make you get butterflies in the stomach. Down below, you can find a list of activities we recommend you do in these towns.

Teuchitlán:


• Visit Guachimontones, a mysterious archeological site.
• Taste the local cuisine in a lagoon front restaurant like “El Soky”.

Ahualulco de Mercado:


• Discover the famous Ball-stones, some natural rock formations that can only be found in three places on Earth.
• Enjoy the view of the majestic Tequila’s Volcano and the Cerro de Ameca.

Etzatlán:


• Meet the authentic Tiro tombs.
• Visit Palacio de Ocomo, an Oconahua’s archeological site.
• Go hiking or rappelling

San Juanito Escobedo:


• Enjoy an authentic Mexican party on October 1st.
• Stroll the ruins of La Providencia, an ancient tequila’s farm.
• Put the city noise away and relax at Laguna Colorada.
The agave-plantations’ route
Whether you start here or it would be the second part of your trip, prepare yourself to get transported to the era of the greatest tequila’s distilleries, stroll gorgeous agave plantations and feel the magic that gave birth to the most Mexican drink. In this tour, you will go through the towns: Magdalena, Tequila, Amatitán, and El Arenal. As we did before, you can find some recommendations to enjoy the Route of Tequila to the limit down here.


Magdalena:


• Visit the Interpretative Museum of Agave Landscapes and Mining.
• Go down an authentic opal mine
• Hang around the handicraft markets and buy unique souvenirs.

Tequila:


• Do a guided visit to the oldest Latin-American distillery, Fábrica La Rojeña.
• Be a guest at a luxurious hotel and enjoy the town at night.
• Taste the original “Cantaritos de Tequila”, a famous drink proper of this town.

Amatitán:


• Make a horse-riding tour around the town.
• Visit the Interpretative Museum of Taverns.
• Listen to the most thrilling myths and legends, you’ve ever heard.

El Arenal:


• Taste a locally produced artisanal beer in La Fortuna.
• Stroll the impressive agave plantations.
• Take all the photos you want of a colonial town full of tradition.
