Tequila is a town of around 50,000 inhabitants in the Jalisco region of Mexico; in the central northern region it is 60 km (about 37 miles) from the city of Guadalajara on the road to Tepic and Puerto Vallarta.
What does Tequila mean?
The name Tequila comes from the Nahuatl word Tecuilan or Tequillan, meaning a place of work or a place of cutting. The ancient indigenous peoples who lived in the area were called Tecuilas.
When was the town of Tequila founded?
On April 15, 1530, the Franciscan Fray Juan Calero and the Spanish Conquistador Cristóbal de Oñate, together with groups of natives founded the township of Santiago de Tequila. However, it was not until 1824 that the town was officially classed as a Villa. The town of Tequila is the birthplace of the artisanal drink that bears its name and dates back centuries.
Why is Tequila a "pueblo mágico"?
The "magical villages" of Mexico are chosen by reason of their natural beauty, cultural riches or historical relevance. With a variety of tequila-based attractions and a wide range of fascinating cultural, natural and tourist activities to bewitch visitors, the town of Tequila is, without a doubt, truly enchanting. It abounds in legends and folklore and was proudly incorporated into the official pueblos mágicos program in 2003.
Tequila traditions and customs
La Bendición: Every evening at nine o'clock, the priest offers a blessing: the church bell tolls three times and at the first chime, everyone stands up, there is a pause in activity throughout the town, and after the third chime, the priest blesses the whole town and its inhabitants.
El Señor de los Rayos: Agriculture is an essential part of the Tequila way of life; before the rains come, the townsfolk carry the statue of the “Señor de los Rayos” around the town in a procession praying for the rain to come without storms and bring a bountiful harvest.
Los Cantaritos: In June we have the day of “los cantaritos”, when families go out to the countryside and play with hollow balls made of mud or pottery with little stones inside that rattle as they are kicked until they finally break.
